Black Codes
Discriminatory laws that severely restricted African Americans’ lives. Mississippi and South Carolina had first enacted black codes in 1865 and other Southern states had quickly followed suit. However, black codes were prohibited by the Civil Rights Act of 1866. By the end of 1866, most Republican Southern state governments had revoked the black codes. Anti-segregation laws were not enforced. Blacks established their own institutions to escape white interference.
Black codes were supposedly illegal through the Civil Rights Act of 1866 except all Southerners were on the same page to constrict African Americans rights.
